Powis's Bus - Cardiff to Penarth - 1860

1860 - Two advertisements for transport between Cardiff Bute Docks and Penarth Town or Penarth Harbour by Powis's Bus. The upper advert dates from 5th May 1860 and the lower 14th July 1860 with both being published within the Cardiff Times. [019] [361]

It is interesting to note that the 'hard-sell' is inherent within the advertiser's rhetoric even back in 1860. The lower advert states : 'This route affords to the public to-and-fro accommodation either from Cardiff to Penarth, and is not dependent upon the state of the tide, neither is it subject to the unpleasantness of the mud which awaits the passenger at some states of the tide, and often causes the greatest inconvenience to those who fancy they will have a pleasant trip, forgetting the long walk which town's people have before reaching the packet. The 'bus route has this advantage, - if a party wishes to travel from the centre of Cardiff to the centre of Penarth, by the bus route he will save ten minutes in time, besides insuring the certainty and pleasantness of landing at the spot he wishes to arrive at, and avoiding the steep hill which must be ascended after leaving the packet landing place at Penarth.'
