September 1888 - A notice published within the South Wales Daily News of a salvage sale by auction of 60,000 Bushels of White Oats (More or less) to be sold in lots to suit the trade and private buyers. It seems that Messrs Gottwaltz & Bowring were acting on behalf of Spiller and Company Limited of Cardiff. Telephone number 2167. An Imperial Bushel, as everyone knows, is a dry measure of volume defined under the Weights and Measures Act of 1824 as 80 avoirdupois pounds of distilled water in air at 62°F. It may be sub-divided into 4 Pecks or 8 Imperial Gallons. (approx. 36 litres). Its mass, or weight, would of course depend upon the particle size, mass density and its current equilibrium moisture content. Oh, and don't forget to add a few rats into the mix of 2,182,123.2 litres of oats just for good measure!
