Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - Working the Ely Tidal Harbour . . .

1859 - 'At the Ely Tidal Harbour several vessels are now loading, including two or three screw steamers, one of which, the 'Isabella Crol', belonging to T. Powell, Esq., in leaving the harbour got on a patch of ground and remained nearly two days. A fine wind prevailed at the time, which was very annoying to the owner. The vessel was in charge of a licensed pilot, who, it appears, is blamed for the mishap.

A report was sent to the Corporation of Bristol, who no doubt will cause a strict inquiry to be made whether the pilot is to blame or not. This shows the necessity of having a Board appointed at Cardiff to adjudicate in such cases without sending to Bristol.' - Cardiff Times - 29th October 1859 [019]

1860 - Penarth Harbour, Dock, and Railway Company. - 'The Directors are prepared to treat with persons willing to erect twenty cottages on the Company's land at the Tidal Harbour. Application as to terms and other particulars must be made in writing to the undersigned. By order, Booth Bacon, Secretary. Secretary' Office, 2nd May, 1860.'

An advertisement from 'The Builder' periodical in its edition of 12th May 1860. [461] I have no record that these cottages were ever constructed on the Company's land at the Tidal Harbour, since there only appears to be a large house named 'River View' and a single cottage on the site. - see page with aerial view and a view of the cottage etc.
