At Edgeware Road Station, London on 24th May 1862. A 'Trial Trip' on the new 3 mile long section of underground railway of the Metropolitan Railway Company. The major contractor for the project was Messrs. Smith & Knight and Mr. George Knight, contractor is seen seated next to Mr. Gladstone's wife (see labels '5' and '3' above). I wonder if their involvement in such a unique and major project took them away from the Penarth Dock contract thus frustrating the Penarth Company? Note that the railway trucks have the Smith & Knight initials on their side planking. [548]

Mr George Knight seated next to Mrs. Gladstone with Mr. Gladstone nearest the camera. His arm resting on the rail and he is looking rather grim. Maybe, he is not too happy about the company his wife is keeping!! [548]
