Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - Reconstruction of Three Tips - 1912 - 17 . . .

Construction Progress : A Photograph Album - A search of the archives of the National Museum of Wales (Amgueddfa Cymru) during Spring 2018 revealed an album of photographs showing No. 5 tip (Tannett Walker Ltd.) and No. 4 tip (East Ferry Road Engineering Co. Ltd.) in various stages of construction at Penarth Dock. The two other tips concerned with the contract for No. 4 tip, i.e. Nos. 11 and 12 tips, were not completed until 1916 and 1917 respectively due to the Seamen's strike coupled with raw material and labour shortages due to the onset of WWI.

Many thanks to the Curator for Industry & Transport at the National Museum of Wales, Mr. Mark Etheridge, and all the staff at Nantgarw for their patience and assistance in helping me to add these heritage images for all to see and appreciate. There does not appear to be a record of who took these photographs but I suspect that it was an official of, or on behalf of, the TVR. The photographs have been cropped since the album is actually a notebook with the corners of each photograph inserted within diagonal cuts in the paper. I have adjusted these faded photographs in an attempt to enhance the technical detail where possible. Whilst only Part 2 is relevant to this chapter I have included Part 1 since it forms an integral part of the album.

1912 - No. 5 Coal Hoist at Penarth Dock - Photo Album - Part 1 - An album of photographs showing Number 5 coal hoist in various stages of construction at Penarth Dock. I have established that this section shows the construction and completion of No. 5 tip by Tannett Walker Limited of Leeds just prior to liquidation in 1913. - 31 pages of photos.

1913 - No. 4 Coal Hoist at Penarth Dock - Photo Album - Part 2 - An album of photographs showing Number 4 coal hoist in various stages of construction at Penarth Dock. This tip formed part of the contract for the construction of three tips, No. 4, No. 11 and No. 12 by the East Ferry Road Engineering Co. Ltd. of London. - 37 pages of photos.
