• c.1909 - The location of the Pumping Engine House from an OS map and a photograph of the exterior of the building taken from the Chapter entitled 'The Quay Wall at the West End of Dock - 1909'
Pumping Engine House - Penarth Dock - 1909.
A photo [030] showing the inclined wall, the location of the culverts and pumping house used to top up the dock level by pumping water from the River Ely. The pumping house and pumps were still in place in 1966 but the pumps were removed for their scrap value by 1970 (by Eddie Avoth & Co. I believe).

Note the two discharge culverts, each of which was equipped with a 40" diameter sluice valve which was closed after pumping operations in order to prevent water back-feeding back through the pumps to the River Ely. The four doorways in the building wall were used to access the four boilers utilised to generate steam in order to drive the two centrifugal pumping engines.
