H.M.S. Melita - (J 289 / M 289) - An Algerine class minesweeper pictured at Penarth Dock c.1958. [002] [20200922]

The vessel was a minesweeper  built by the Redfern Construction Limited otherwise, the Toronto Shipbuilding Company of Ontario, Canada. She was launched during December 1942 and commissioned in December 1943; WWII continued until September 1945. Her Commander was Gerald Rowe May RNR. The vessel remained as part of the Royal Naval Reserve Fleet and she is pictured above, probably in 1958, prior to her demise at the hands of the shipbreakers of Llanelli in February 1959. [859]
