H.M.S. Serene - (M354) - Another Algerine class minesweeper pictured at Penarth Dock during 1953. She was laid down in July 1943 and launched in October the same year at the Redfern Construction Limited of Toronto, Canada. The vessel was originally built as HMCS Leaside J354 for the Canadian Navy but prior to her launch she was assigned to the Royal Navy. Photograph credit [275] The lower image has been colourised.
Following WWII, she was laid up at Penarth Dock and met the shipbreakers at Llanelli during March 1959. The remainder of the Algerine class of vessels were scrapped by 1962.
She was of standard displacement of 1,040 gross tons being 255' 0" long x 35' 6" beam x 11' 6" draught. The vessel had a speed of 16.5 knots and during wartime, a complement of between 104 to 138 ratings and officers.
The Algerine class were the largest minesweepers built for the Royal Navy and were commonly assigned to duties such as escort vessels for convoys as well as performing their normal minesweeping duties during, and after, WWII.
Diesel Engine Specification : One 5RW driving a 50 kW auxiliary generator set at 1,000 rpm, and/or two B4 Impulse sets, each powered by a 6RW producing 160/128 bhp at 1,500/1,200 rpm.
