Captain Walter Murray Pengelley - (1824 - 1897)

The plaque to Captain Pengelly -1897 - St augustine's Church - Penarth

The Memorial Tablet - The tablet consists of a massive brass plate mounted on a rectangular slab of black marble nearly three feet square. The plate, which is peculiarly appropriate, is from a design by Capt. Langlois, of Penarth Dock. The upper foil of the plate is filled with a Maltese cross, and the lower foil by an anchor, both embossed and exceedingly well executed. the inscription, much of which is in illuminated letters, is as follows:-

"In memory of Commander Walter Murray Pengelley, of her Majesty's late Indian Navy, for 24 years dockmaster at Penarth, who died December 29th, 1897. He was for many years honorary secretary of the Penarth branch Mission to Seamen, and by his influence the church and institute connected with this mission were erected in 1878 at Penarth Dock. He was also honorary secretary from 1875 to 1897 of the Penarth branch of the National Lifeboat Institution. He was a thorough Christian and a true friend to the sailor. He was also churchwarden of this church from 1878 to 1880. This tablet was here placed as a token of the esteem and respect in which he was held by the staff of the Penarth Dock." Under the anchor is the text, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."

The work of engraving and embossing this massive plate was entrusted to Mr E. Newby, engraver, &c., Castle-street, Cardiff, and has been carried out by him with great taste and skill." Cardiff Times [019] 28th January 1899.

Map of Penarth Dock

Mr Pengelley lived at 'The Ferns (Dock Masters House)' which gave him a clear view of the dock and harbour. [247] I wonder what he would have thought of the view today - no ships, no coal, no docks and the barrage!!
