1887 - It is a great mistake of Lord Selborne and other opponents to Disestablishment in Wales to suppose that all members of the Church of England in the Principality agree with them. There, as in England, there are many Churchmen who favour Disestablishment upon the ground of justice. And I hardly think that the Welsh Established clergy are doing much to increase the desire of their flocks that the loaves and fishes should still go into the pockets of rectors. Here is an instance of the arbitrary and intolerant spirit which characterises the action of some of these gentlemen.
For many years, Captain Pengelley has read the lessons in the Church of St. Augustine, at Penarth. A Sunday or two ago he committed the heinous crime of reading the lessons at the service of another clergyman. The Rector of St. Augustine at once informed him that he could not be allowed to read the lessons again in his church. - Truth v.22 [1211] [499] 10th November 1887.
