George Frederick Wehrley - [1890 - 1916]

The Friends of St. Augustines website [358] has the following roll-of-honour entry for Mr. Wehrley (sometimes incorrectly spelt Wherley but corrected below):-

'George Frederick Wehrley. George was born in Penarth, (1890) the son of Carl and Bertha Wehrley (German citizens), brother of Leopold Ernest, Bertha Louise, Maria Matilda Noel and Albert Victor Wehrley. In 1911 the family lived at 26 Windsor Terrace, Penarth. George was a photographer and Carl was a public billiard room proprietor. All the children of the family were born in Penarth. From Army records – parents CF & B Wehrley, brothers L. E., C. H. (in South Africa), & A. V.; sisters B. L. & M. N. Wehrley. He served in the Royal Garrison Artillery (service number 44210) and the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. His rank was Sergeant (service number 31174). George was killed in action on 22nd December 1916 aged 26 and is commemorated on Pier and Face 4 A., Thiepval Memorial. From Army records – Civilian occupation given as shop assistant George Wehrley is described as being 5ft 10ins tall, weighing 119lb and with an expanded chest measurement of 34ins. He had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and dark hair.'

As stated above, George was a avid photographer of shipping amongst his many other subjects. He advertised as follows:-

Photographic Pictures of Ships - 'To Postcard Collectors, Sailor's Relatives and Friends. Write for List to G. WEHRLEY & CO., Photographers, PENARTH, GLAM. Largest Collection in South Wales.' The North Wales Express [361] [376] 17th June 1910.
