The approximate timeline reads as follows :

c.1875 - 1884 - Alfred Hill was active at Penarth Dock being listed in local trade directories as a blacksmith.

1884 - 1895 - Mr Hill was in partnership with Frederic George Hodges in the firm of Messrs Hodges & Hill at Penarth Dock.

1895 - 1910 - Mr. Hill was working as ship and boat builder at Penarth Dock in the name of Alfred Hill & Company.

1870 - There was Christopher Hill - master shipwright at Penarth listed in a trade directory. Perhaps he was the father of Alfred Hill?? [000] [002]

1875 - Worrall's Directory of South Wales - Penarth - listed under Blacksmiths ; Hodges Fredk., (shipsmith), Docks. - listed under Carpenters and Wheelwrights ; Hill Alfred, Docks. [623]

1880 - 81 - Butcher's Cardiff Directory - lists under Penarth Private Residents ; Hodges Fredk. G., Plymouth-place. - and - Hill, Alfred, Talybont house, Plymouth-place. [623]

1899 - Cardiff & District Trades Directory - under ship and boat builders - Hill, Alfred. [623]

1902-03 - Alfred Hills and George Hill listed as shipwights - Penarth - Maybe George was a relative or son of Alfred?  [000] [002]

1903 - Listed in the Trades' Directory of Wales, 1903 under :  Blacksmiths, Coppersmiths, Engineers, Plumbers and Gas-fitters as well as Ship Repairers : Hill. Alfred, Docks, Penarth. [671] [670]

Interestingly there is also an entry listed under Ship and Boat Builders : Hill, J., Docks, Penarth. - I'm not sure if this is connected to Alfred Hill - Can anyone assist me here please?

1910 - The Evening Express reported on the passing of Mr. Alfred Hill :

Penarth Resident's Death - 'Mr. Alfred Hill, a well-known engineer and ship repairer at Penarth Dock, died suddenly, at his residence, 2, Paget-terrace, yesterday afternoon. The deceased gentleman, who was 66 years of age, fell down about six weeks ago and fractured his leg, but he progressed favourably after that. However, after eating his mid-day meal yesterday, he suddenly expired, heart failure being the cause of death.' - Evening Express [135] [361] 7th March 1910.

Local Wills - 'Mr. Alfred Hill, of 2 Paget-terrace, Penarth, formerly of 4, Dock-road, Plymouth-place, Penarth, shipwright, who died on the 6th of March, aged 66 years, left estate of the gross value of £1,382, of which £884 is net personally, and probate of his will of the 5th July, 1888, has been granted to his widow, Mrs. Jane Hill. the testator left his estate upon trust for his wife during widowhood, with remainder to his children.' - Evening Express [135] [361] 8th June 1910.

1911 - Cardiff Directory incl. Penarth . . .  -  Hill A. & Co., engineers and ship repairers - (1911 - [681] )

1914 - Cardiff, Newport & District Trades Directory - Shipbuilders and Ship Repairers - Hill, Alfred, & Co. Docks. Phone No. 59. - (1914 - [733] )
