Ships Around Britain - Lightship - Ewbanks Limited Breaksea Lightship

The illustration is by Derek Blackurst [276] and the location is probably the River Dart estuary, South Devon, the home of the yard and works of Philip & Son Ltd., Shipbuilders & Engineers, the birthplace of many Trinity House lightvessels.

A gentleman named Lyndon Pritchard, who is closely involved with the Friends of LV72 Juno, a lightvessel currently lying on the banks of the River Neath in South Wales, forwarded a copy of the Breaksea Lightship from the series 'Ships Around Britain' issued by Ewbanks Limited of Pontefract, Yorkshire. [000] [002]

This company was one of a number which grew prosperous in the Pontefract locality producing locally grown liquorice, in fact the company was only the second to process liquorice and commenced production in 1810. By 1887, it had expanded to the Eagle Liquorice Works, Friarwood and became Ewbanks Limited in 1913. The card obviously pre-dates the company closure in July 1965.
