'Passat' at sea in full sail. This photograph is taken near Wellington, New Zealand. She had 34 sails including 18 square sails, 9 staysails, 4 foresails and 3 spanker sails providing a total of 49,514 square feet (4,600 m2) later slightly reduced to 43,000 square feet (4,000 m2) giving her a speed of about 18 knots under sail. After leaving Penarth Dock she had a major refit and it was during this refit, in 1951, that a 900 horsepower diesel engine was fitted. The lower image has been colourised. [098] [279]
