Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

'Passat' and 'Pamir' moored in Penarth Dock in 1950.

'Pamir' and 'Passat' - a fine view from above decks giving a great sense of what it must have been like furling sails in rough weather with just a wet rope between you and the deck or the waves. [071]

The railway sidings to the coal tips on the southern side have been removed by early 1950 as this photo shows but the more modern coal tips remain in place. The lock gates between the dock and basin are missing but the Quonson huts are still in place as a reminder of the American occupation during WWII and the part that Penarth Dock played in the 'D' Day landings. The lower image has been colourised.

closeup of Pontton at Penarth Dock 1950

A slightly enlarged and colourised view of the main image. The hydraulic accumulator of No 13 tip (distant) is not distinct but there is still one in place at No 5 tip of which I was not previously aware. At the Penarth Pontoon and Slipway Company a ship is under repair on the pontoon and making smoke. The old slipway and gridiron has been abandoned and is a derelict reminder of the the former Penarth Ship Building and Ship Repairing Company days. [071]
