Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - Pamir and Passat - the end of an era . . .

Last Days of Two Grain Barques - The Finnish grain barque Pamir and her sister ship Passat, which are shortly to be towed to Antwerp where they will be broken up, are seen (top) lying at Penarth Docks near Cardiff. On board the Pamir a retired seaman, acting in the capacity of caretaker, keeps watch over this famous old sailing ship. One of his major worries is the rats which are gradually eating into the sails stored away (right). To combat this traps are set, and in the picture on the left one of these is being sprung in the wheelhouse. The caretaker, who lives in Penarth, has spent the greater part of the last six months on board, making only occasional visits to his home.
