The view along the esplanade of Penarth beach and pier with the tide half in, or is it half out?! A Campbell's White Funnel Fleet paddle steamer, probably 'Britannia' or one of her sister ships, had just cast off from the pier and horse drawn bathing machines are available for the ladies to use. Gentlemen stroll with their ladies, wives or mistresses, along the shingle beach. Probably a scene dating from around the turn of the 20th century. There is even space to park my car on the promenade and no traffic wardens to worry you - although last time Julie and I stayed at the hotel just by the yacht club, the Penarth traffic wardens were apparently extinct! I also noted that you can't get a knickerbocker glory from Mr. Rabbiotti's fine establishment anymore since the Beachcliff Building was vandalised. Julie used to have toast there every morning with her Dad before starting her secretarial day at the Penarth Dock Engineering Company whilst Morgan, her much loved father, was a coach painter at Barry.
