Penarth esplanade storm
Penarth esplanade storm
The view on a stormy day at high tide (probably a tidal surge) of the Penarth esplanade. The waves wash the doors of the yacht club whilst members look on from the balcony. Not a good day for messing about in boats except that at sea coal was still being shipped regardless of the weather. The pier seems also to be awash with only Penarth Head standing foursquare, firm, stubbornly defiant, against the tidal onslaught of the Seven Sea. The lower image has been colourised. [000] [002]

Penarth Esplanade c. 1910
A view dating from about 1910 which is so similar in character to a postcard published by Ernest T. Bush that it makes me believe that the photographer just lifted his tripod and camera about 20 yards backwards, inserted a new photographic plate, hid beneath the cloth and clicked. He (or she) was definitely not standing in the same place as the photographer in the upper image! At least not unless he had been let out for the day from the institution - I think it was the Whitchurch Hospital at that time! [000] [002] [391]
