Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - Shipwright's Working Rules and Price List - 1937 - 1959

'Piecework' was normally considered to be a repetitive task undertaken against a tariff, which in this case is well prescribed within Part III of this book. The term dates to the 16th century but was adopted more commonly during the industrial revolution since many workers, especially those in textile production, were paid by the quantity produced rather than for the hours spent. 'Plaintime' working, on the other hand, was work undertaken against an hourly rate of pay.
