'The end of a beautiful ship : the four-masted 'Passat', one of the last of the ocean-going windjammers, being towed to the scrap-yard. Both 'Passat' and 'Pamir', those two Finnish four-masted steel barques, which until recently delighted all eyes as they finished their yearly grain voyage from Australia to England with all sails set, are being broken up. Our picture shows 'Passat' leaving Penarth under tow for an Antwerp shipbreaker's. She was built in Germany in 1911, Pamir in 1905.'
The text and sad sight from an unknown magazine (now part of the Penarth Dock Collection) during 1951 as 'Passat' passes the trumpet shaped jetty at the entrance to Penarth Dock on a rainy day bound for Antwerp and the breaker's yard. As the preceding pages state, she was thankfully saved and today has pride of place in the port of Travemuende near Lübeck in Northern Germany. [000] [001]
