One service was, however, maintained during the whole of this period, although in the years 1917 and 1918 only by a small vessel, the 'Duchess of Devonshire', which was chartered by the Company.

Some of the vessels had adventurous careers during that war, and it may be of interest, as one example, to recall something of what happened to the 'Barry'. After sailing with prisoners of war to Dublin and returning to Bristol, she left on 24th July, 1915, and finally arrived at Mundros in the Mediterranean on 8th August.
