s.s. 'Devonia' & Cardiff Docks - The postcard probably dates from the period 1911 - 1914. [001] [20170830]
'Devonia' formed part of the armada of ships sent during WWII to Dunkirk. In May 1940, during heavy bombardment, the order was given to abandon ship. The guns were 'spiked', the radio equipment destroyed and the sea-cocks opened to prevent her use by the enemy. She apparently lay on the beach at Dunkirk for four years and then disappeared. Later, she was allegedly sighted, by a gentleman who knew the vessel well, sailing the river Ems in Germany but this fact has never been satisfactorily substantiated. A mysterious and sad end indeed!
