Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - Cardiff, Penarth and Environs - [vintage photo and postcard album] . . .

Penarth from the Pier

Penarth from the Pier - A Bush Series postcard from the first years of the twentieth century. The advertisement hanging from the railings is for Bryant and May's Matches just in case you are sailing below. The Esplanade Hotel looks warm and inviting on this misty morning when all sensible people are still tucked up in bed. A new postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Penarth Head from the Pier, Penarth

Penarth Head from the Pier, Penarth - A postcard from the Noah's Ark Series, Penarth and post stamped August 1910. It is written in pencil which is somewhat faded but I can make out that it is addressed to Master Davies in Merthyr Tydfil. It starts : 'Grandma, Harry and I spent a very enjoyable day in Penarth yesterday and you up in Dowlais.' Seems that Master Davies had drawn the short straw again and no ice cream either! Another piece of faded social history from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Esplanade Hotel from Pier, Penarth

Esplanade Hotel from Pier, Penarth - Another view where perhaps a spaceship has landed and taken all the inhabitants to another planet! The baths and Esplanade Hotel looking resplendent without traffic and pedestrians alike. The bandstand is silent and the sea is clear and azure blue. Can you spot the deliberate mistake by Valentine's the publishers of this postcard? Answers please, addressed to Dai-the-Rat, in a sealed glass bottle thrown from the pier! [001]

Penarth Beach and Esplanade Hotel
Penarth Beach and Esplanade Hotel - An antique Murrell's of Penarth postcard which is unposted. Children play on the sparsely sandy beach which was apparently washed away and replaced by pebbles by the action of longshore drift - (the little brats apparently survived though!). Another view from the first years of the twentieth century and held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]
