'The Crew of the 'Oceana' of Hamburg at Penarth Dock' - Another fine photograph by G. Wehrley & Co. with his subject the crew of a German registered vessel moored at Penarth Dock. The vessel is moored at the northern quay and I can make out No. 20 tip astern which dates the photo between 1905 and the outbreak of WWI in 1914. In the top right corner of the photograph I can identify the skyline of the bowery area of Penarth and the German text on the reverse side of the postcard confirms that we are indeed at Penarth.

There is also uncertainty regarding identity of the 'Oceana' since there was a P & O owned, four-masted barque with the same name operating during in the period. The only record I can find of 'Oceana' at Penarth Dock was published within the Western Mail when she arrived light in the Roads on 2nd December 1894. However, this probably pre-dates George Wehrley's photographic activity at Penarth. Any, and all, assistance would be very welcome to uncover more information about this mystery photograph. Another heritage record held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20181023]
