s.s. 'Monksgarth' - She was built in 1907 at the yard of the Clyde Shipbuilding & Engineering Company Limited, Glasgow and was of 1,928 gross register tons. She was owned by the R. & J. H. Rea Limited of Liverpool who also had an office at Cardiff. During August 1917, whilst on a voyage from Barry to Bordeaux with a cargo of coal, she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by the German submarine UC-48, being 17 miles N by E ¼ E from Ushant NW Lighthouse, Finistère. She was defensively-armed and gladly there was no loss of life amongst the crew. Another of the fine heritage postcards published by G.
