c.1910 - Two gentlemen proudly showing their motorcycles. The photograph was taken from Windsor Place looking onto Windsor Road, Penarth. The postcard/photograph was produced by G. Wehrley & Co., of 97 Glebe Street, Penarth. With many thanks to David Ings for sharing the photograph. [654]
I put the question of identity of these fine machines to my son, Martin, who promptly asked his biker friends from around the Holmfirth ('Last of the Summer Wine') area and they have they have kindly supplied most of the following info : -
The machine on the right of the photograph is a single-speed, 'Trusty' Triumph, and was manufactured between 1908 and 1913. The registration number H5156 is from Middlesex County Council. The bike had a single cylinder, 3½ H.P. engine and won the Single Cylinder Class of the 1908 T.T. Races, which provided Triumph with a great increase in popularity of the brand.
The machine on the left of the photograph is probably from the Arno Motor Company, of Coventry, but Arno also supplied a company named Gamage who sold them under thier own name. Given the differences in the fuel tank livery, it could be a Gamage or an Arno machine! The number plate begins L782 and hence is a Glamorganshire registration number. The date is not known but they began production of motor cycles in 1906 and during 1908 they exhibited a long, low, bike with a single cylinder, 3 or 3½ H.P. engine, with chain drive, which closely resembles the machine in Mr. George Wehrley's fine photographic record above.
Many thanks to the Yorkshire Bikers for their assistance! Credit for images below. [002]
