Engines at Penarth Dock - 1927 - GWR

The fine book 'We Remember It Well' [326] from the Penarth Past Oral History Group features this photograph credited to H. C. Casserly. It is titled 'Engines of Penarth Dock, 1927'. Whilst the 0-6-0 and 0-6-2 locomotives were the workhorse of the Taff Vale Railway coal transportation system this engine, renumbered 699 by the GWR after 1922, is not listed in my book 'Locomotives of the TVR' [139] hence I suspect she is an alien from the Cardiff Railway or Rhymney Railway perhaps! Your assistance in her identification and history would be very welcome here. . .

The book 'Taff Vale Lines to Penarth' also features this photograph credited to H. C. Casserly. The text enlightens us : 'Two more locomotives at Penarth Dock shed in 1st May, 1927 ; nearer the camera is ex-Barry Railway 'A' Class 0-6-0T Nos. 699 (Barry Railway No.1), while beyond is ex-TVR 'N' Class 0-6-2T No. 500 (TVR No. 187) still fitted with the TVR system of auto-train control apparatus.'
