Taff Vale Engine No. 285 Class - Type 4-4-0T - A TVR schematic which appears to have been issued by the GWR at Swindon given that the TVR and GWR engine numbers are indicated. Another heritage artifact held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20200318]

Taff Vale Railway 4-4-0T engine number 286 which was identical to number 287 and 285. [001] [20200318]

'The Taff Vale Railway's first purpose-built passenger tanks were three outside-cylinder 4-4-0T's that were built at the Cardiff Works of the TVR during 1884/85 - they were Nos. 67-69 but later became Nos. 285-287. These engines seemed to owe something in their design to William Adams' North London Railway type. In 1907 they were fitted with the Taff Vale Railway's unsightly and cumbersome auto-train gear, as shown on 4-4-0T No. 285 above. They were given larger boilers during 1914-15 and would become GWR Nos. 1153, 1184 and 999, but would be withdrawn in 1925.' - Steam Days Magazine No. 271 [1037] March 2012. [20220714]
