Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - The Railway Infrastructure of Penarth Dock and Ely Tidal Harbour   . . .

It may be seen from the table on the preceding page that no fewer than 19 locomotives were based at the Penarth Dock engine shed at the demise of the TVR and upon its absorption into the GWR as a result of the 1921 Railways Act. Many thanks to The Great Western Archive as well as other sources for the data necessary to enable me to compile this table. [407]

A number of other locos were based at the shed before the GWR closure of the Penarth Engine Shed on the 13th April 1929. The shed had sadly been demolished by 1932.

In addition to the locomotives listed within the table, the Welsh Railways Research Circle [737] have assisted me with information relating to other locos with connections to Penarth Dock Engine Shed being entries within Mr. J. W. P. Rowledge's Locomotive Allocations Book and are as follows:

All and any assistance/corrections regarding the history of these locomotives would be greatly appreciated (especially GWR Nos. 6641 and 6642). Also information regarding locos in use at the Ely Tidal Harbour and its Engine Shed would be very welcome.

The Penarth Dock Shed consisted of an engine shed complete with a machine shop and smithy which opened in 1887 and closed in 1929. [1053]

The expenditure for the engine shed was reported within the 'Engineering' [516] [499] magazine as £2,965 in its edition of 5th August 1887. (equivalent to £300.5k in August 2022).
