Penarth Dock Basin - Tip Nos. 15, 16, 17 & 18 - North Side
Penarth Dock Basin coal tips

Developments at the turn of the 20th century - This photo dating from around 1908 was included within an acquisition via eBay of over one hundred views of Cardiff and District which has been added to my Penarth Dock Collection. The four moving coal tips are situated at the north quay of the basin and the 'Peruviana' looks to be down on her marks - the Plimsoll line - indicating that she is fully laden with good old Welsh steam coal and has steam up awaiting the tide for departure. One shute remains lowered at the tips which could indicate that her bunkers are being topped up. [001] [328]

Developments at the turn of the 20th century - An enlargement of a section of postcard dating from c.1908. The swing bridge across the locks between the basin and main dock can be clearly seen. The bridge is pivoted from the far side of the lock and rotates neatly into the recess in the quay wall to permit ships to pass through. The entrance to the subway (opened in 1900) is clear as are two accumulator towers which provided the instantaneous hydraulic power for the operation of the coal tips, swing bridge and lock gates. [000] [001]
