• June 1864 - The New Road to Penarth - 'The contract for making the new road between Cardiff Docks and Penarth has just been let to Messrs. James and Price, in conjunction with Messrs. De Bergue and Co., of London.

The work will be commenced forthwith, as the whole is to be completed in a year. This will involve the outlay of £18,000 or £19,000.' - Cardiff Times [019] [361] 24th June 1864.

Interestingly, and somewhat at odds with the newspaper report above, the Minutes [701] of the Board of Directors of the Penarth Harbour, Dock & Railway Company record that on 13.6.1864 the following tenders received were reviewed at the meeting : -

Tenders for New Road from Cardiff to Penarth :

Messrs. Finch & Heath £20,104 - 3 - 11d.
  Mr. C. Pearson £19,710 - 14 - 2d.
  Messrs. De Bergue & Coy. £18,916 - 4 - 2d. (accepted)
  Worcester Engine Co. £18,522 - 10 - 10d.

The contract was clearly placed with De Bergue & Company. Possibly, De Berque accepted the contract on the basis that they undertook the ironwork element, i.e. swing-bridges etc., and subsequently sub-contracted the civil engineering elements, including road-building, masonry bridge piers, etc., to James and Price.

The following entry is taken from Wakeford's Cardiff Directory [523]  [524] of 1863 : -

'James and Price, builders and contractors, statuary and marble works, East wharf and Trinity street. '

William, Parry, James resided at Romilly crescent, Canton and Peter Price at Splottlands.
