Taff swing bridge - construction stage

This photograph shows about 100 metres of the completed swing bridge and its associated viaducts and dates after late 1866. It clearly shows the scale of the central circular masonry support pier upon which the swing bridge rotates to permit shipping to pass through. The cross-braced wooden frames support the roadway above and are at 30 feet centres on either side of the swing bridge which are also clearly illustrated. This great photograph also forms part of the digital online media collection of the Cardiff Central Library. [405]
