Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - Swing Bridge Connections : Penarth Dock, River Taff and Glamorganshire Canal . . .
The completed swing bridge over the River Taff after its opening in 1866 taken from a viewpoint upstream at low water. The route of navigation for shipping is clearly defined at this time, however, rivers do not always behave themselves and only a few years later Taffy rebelled! This photograph forms part of the digital online media collection of the Cardiff Central Library. [405]
This photograph shows the viaduct supports, roadway, handrail and gaslight illumination and dates after late 1866. The cross-braced wooden frames support the roadway above and are at 30 feet centres on either side of the swing bridge anchored into the deep mud of the estuary. Another great photograph from the digital online media collection of the Cardiff Central Library. [405]
