Inner lock gates of the sea lock of the Glamorganshire Canal
A lovely heritage view of the inner lock gates of the sea lock of the Glamorganshire Canal. The swing bridge would be situated just behind us over the lock. The image has been converted to sepia tint and is otherwise as borrowed with thanks from the on-line digital media collection of Cardiff Central Library. [405]

Inner lock gates of the sea lock of the Glamorganshire Canal

Another c.1890 heritage view of those slightly leaky inner lock gates of the sea lock of the Glamorganshire Canal. This one emanates from the Peoples Collection and has been adjusted to sepia tint. [048]

The canal is described thus within 'A Dictionary, Practical, Theoretical, and Historical of Commerce and Commercial Navigation' published in 1869 : -

'Glamorgan Canal - The approach to this canal is by the river Taff. Width of gates of Sea Lock 27 feet ; length 103 feet ; depth of water on sill of inner gates 13 feet ; length of canal for loading and discharging vessels 5,415 feet ; average width 100 feet ; depth of water in canal 13 to 9 feet.' Old Sea Lock Hotel, Glamorganshire Canal
Just time for a pint or two in the Old Sea Lock Hotel, situated between James Street and the Sea Lock of the Glamorganshire Canal back in 1891. Thirsty work opening and closing manually operated lock gates it is! Another heritage photograph borrowed from the Peoples Collection which has been adjusted to sepia tint. [048]
