remnants of the foundations of the swing bridge over the Glamorganshire Canal Sea Lock
A 1902 photograph of the remnants of the foundations of the swing bridge over the Glamorganshire Canal Sea Lock borrowed from a wonderful book, Glamorganshire and Aberdare Canals, Volume 2. The image is credited to H. J. B. Wills and the text states that the road opposite is the Old Ferry Road and the house on the right of the image is the dockmaster's house. The road was abandoned and the swing bridge removed when the new Clarence Road Bridge was opened in September 1889. [528]

A section of the 1885 OS map : 'Surveyed in 1878-9 and 'printed from a transfer to Zinc in 1885'. Showing the area of Butetown adjacent to the sea lock of the Glamorganshire Canal a mere 25½ miles from Merthyr. [010] [398]

'Ceres' a John Davies boat (D. W. Davies warehouse, Cardiff) awaiting entrance to, or discharging her cargo, at the outer gate of the Sea Lock of the Glamorganshire Canal during the 1880's. The photograph captures the proximity of the Sea Lock to the Hamadryad Hospital Ship which may be seen anchored close by. Another photograph from the book the Glamorganshire and Aberdare Canals, Volume 2. [528]
