Another photograph by J. L. Howe of Penarth during March 1884 taken from Penarth Dock beach at low-water

Another photograph by J. L. Howe of Penarth during March 1884 taken from Penarth Dock beach at low-water. On the reverse there is a faded inscription of the subject matter ; 'Taken at 6 pm. Low water about 7 pm.' The vessels are identified as the steamships 'Driffield' (centre) and 'Ardangorn' (right). I am unable to decipher the name of the vessel at the left hand side of the photograph but show an enlargement of the text below for all you handwriting experts to assist me with! Once again, with many thanks to the Glamorgan Archives, Cardiff. [599] [archive reference DCOMC-30-6-11] [20171120]

The s.s. 'Ardangorn' was built in 1881 and owned by the Ardan Steamship Company / Clark & Service of Glasgow. Later she was sold to owners in Bombay and was scrapped in 1928.

s.s. 'Driffield' (named after a town in North Yorkshire) was built in 1882 at the yard of Richardson, Duck & Co. Ltd. of Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees. She was of 1,793 gross registered tons. She foundered off Jutland and was lost in November 1887.
