1883 - So where exactly is Cefn y Wrâch situated? A section of a map of Cardiff and Penarth dated 1883 held in the Penarth Dock Collection which was published within the French 'Atlas des Portes Ètrangers' The paths of the rivers Taff and Ely are indicated as are the West and East Mud and the Penarth Flats. The Penarth Dock has been surveyed without the extension which was opened in the same year and there is confusion as to the numbers of coal tips. The surveyor must have exclaimed 'Sacré bleu' as he read the notes made during the survey. 'Dix ou onze?' 'Je ne me souviens plus' coal tips, okay I'll draw eleven, I don't think they will notice! mid 1890's - A section of a small map from a handbook of Cardiff and Penarth which I date to c.1895 also held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] The Mouth of the Taff and the Mouth of the Ely are indicated clearly. Penarth Flats or West Mud is combined on this map and The Patch is opposite the entrance to Penarth Dock but Cefn-y-Wrâch is not marked.

1833 - A section of the 1833 OS map showing the Mouth of the Ely and the Mouth of the Taff. It was published at the Tower of London on the 1st January 1883 by Lieut. Colonel Colby of the Royal Engineers. The map also provides an explanation of the undefined nature of the mudbanks and sea-lanes around Penarth Head 'The Coast below high water mark supplied by the Admiralty'. Interestingly, 'The Orchards' are indicated off Cardiff East Moors and 'The Splot'. [010] [398]

1840 - Part of a map 'The Environs of Cardiff in 1840' from 'Cardiff Records' which shows the original cut leading out of the East Bute Dock to the River Taff. [624] Strangely, the Cefn-y-Wrâch shoal is not indicated on this map either!
