The supply of 'boots' is an interesting entry in that there are nine entries in the Cost Book relating to purchases from James Mc Kenna & Co. over the period of the construction works. In addition, H. A. Newton, Cambrian Rubber Co. and J. Murphy supplied 'boots' whereas A. Chadwick & Co. supplied 'shoes' to the works, each on a single occasion. The quantity supplied suggests that workers were issued with boots to perform their work at a time perhaps when many walked the streets without stout or other footware of any significant sort! I can almost hear that distinctive swelching sound as they walked up the hill at the end of the day with their boots full of soggy, smelly, River Ely ooze!!
