Volume Ten - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - Penarth Harbour, Dock & Railway Company . . .

8.10.1860 :  Mr. Dobson authorised to proceed with the erection of the new Ballast Cranes.

Resolved, that this meeting is of the opinion that the Contractors for the Dock are not prosecuting the work with proper vigour. Making every allowance for the bad season which has intervened since the period of taking the Contract, comparatively little has yet been done.

That the Engineers be requested to urge the Contractors to a more rapid progress, as the importance of the Dock to the success of the undertaking will compel the Directors to hold the Contractors to their Contract as to the period of completion.

Ordered, that the Secretary write to Mr. Graves (sic) that if he does not at once put the wheels on the tip-wagons right where they are, not so, the Company will do it at their expense.

Payment - R. Graves - on a/c of tip wagons - £200

22.10.1860 : Payment - R. Greaves - Tip Wagons - £100

27.10.1860 : Engineer's Estimate of total cost of Works : -

Railway & Harbour
£263,740
  Dock & Branch Railway
340,000
  Extension of Dock
67,000
  Plant for working
40,000

------------
£710,740
------------

The Engineers informed the meeting that they thought the Dock would be completed by the autumn of 1862. (A somewhat opimistic and misguided estimate since the actual date of opening of the dock was on 10th June 1865 !)
