◊ 1886 : Entrance to Penarth Dock. The entire lithographic print from the article which in addition shows a barque in tow of a steam tug leaving the basin at high tide. The lock gates appear to be open thus permitting vessels to sail directly out of the dock saving time on locking up or down to satisfy differing water levels. A design feature dating back to the early 1860's and Mr. John Hawkshaw's truly inventive concept for the efficiency of Penarth Dock over the rival Bute Docks! The lower image has been colourised.
