Part of the river frontage and wharfage accommodation have been leased to the South Wales  Public Wharf, Warehouse and Transit Company, Limited, who carry on a considerable import trade, and have for its convenience erected commodious and extensive warehouses for the storage of grain, flour and general merchandise. This company has two large jetties fitted with several hydraulic cranes. Steamers up to 3,000 tons burthen take the ground and unload with safety.

The same company have also erected at the Ely Harbour five large petroleum storage tanks capable of storing nearly 6,000 tons of oil. From the river wharf to the tanks a 7-inch filling pipe is laid by which large steamers of a carrying capacity of 4,000 tons, and which are constructed exclusively for the carrying of oil cargoes are discharged, the oil being pumped out in a few  hours. The whole of the arrangements for the unloading of the steamers, storage, cooperage, filling and barreling are of the most approved modern type, and are of a very interesting character, and well worthy of a visit to anyone who could obtain an order to view the appliances.
