Volume Ten - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Even more aspects - Darwinian Connections . . . The Charles Darwin Way : So why is it that Charles Darwin is not honoured in Penarth given that he contributed so heavily to the development of the Penarth Dock and Ely Tidal Harbour projects and thus to the growth and resultant wealth engendered within the town of Penarth? According to the Streetlist [758] online gazetteer, the only town in Wales to have a street named after him is Barry. Charles Darwin Way fronts the former No.1 Barry Dock ; the wharf at the seaward end used to accommodate a research vessel base. The National Environment Research Council had its fleet of four oceanographic research ships based there. They were christened 'Discovery', 'Challenger', 'James Ross' and, then of course, the RRS 'Charles Darwin'. Well done Barry!
