s.s. 'Ceto' - Report of Survey for Repairs of Engines & Boilers for Ceto - 2nd June 1880.
She was surveyed afloat by Mr. A. E. Keydell following the replacement of her crankshaft, presumably at the Penarth Ship Building and Shiprepairing Company Limited. The vessel was of 970 Gross Register Tonnage and registered to the Port of London having been built by Matthew Pearse and Company of North Shore shipyard, Stockton-on-Tees, during 1878.
The Times newspaper reported the loss of the Ceto during August 1886 :
Disaster at Sea - 'The steamer Lebanon, of Sunderland, arrived at that port yesterday with the crew of two vessels which had been in collision. One of these was the Ceto, of London, which had been in a collision with the Scotch boat Ballater off Whitby, during a dense fog. The latter was completely cut down, and her crew were taken on board the steamer. The Ceto afterwards came into collision with the Lebanon and was sunk, and the two crews on board the Ceto were transferred to the Lebanon, the number of men being 53.' - The Times - [792] - 21st August 1886.
