The s.s. Jenny Otto was lost when she ran aground on the 11th January 1899 at Coolernose Point, near Craster, Northumberland, when on passage from Palamos, Spain to Burntisland, with a cargo of cork shavings. A Board of Trade enquiry held at the Town Hall, North Shields a few days later concluded that an incorrect course had been set from Whitby and that the vessel was not navigated with proper seamanlike care. The certificates of competency for the Master, John Lewis, and Second Officer, Alfred Cowden, were suspended for four and two months respectively.
