s.s. 'Madras' - Report of Survey for Repairs, &c. for Madras - 30th July 1880.
She was surveyed upon the Patent Slipway of the Penarth Ship Building & Shiprepairing Company Limited by Mr. A. E. Keydell. The vessel was a screw steamer of 1,672 Gross Register Tonnage and registered to the Port of London having been built by Pearse & Company of Stockton during 1874. The survey was necessary 'on account of damage sustained in consequence of grounding in the entrance to the Dardanelles on the 28th of April 1880.' However, Mr. Keydell was clearly unhappy that he was unable to examine the cement? of the after ballast tank, which had not been prepared when requested!

During August 1886 s.s. 'Madras' struck a rock on the Taichow Islands and was lost whilst en route Nagasaki for Hong Kong with coal. An inquiry was held at Victoria, Hong Kong which held that no fault was attached to the Master or Offices of the vessel and it was recommended that a survey of the locality be carried out.
