The vessel was built by the Penarth Ship Building and Shiprepairing Company Limited but the donkey boiler was sub-contracted for manufacture to Messrs. W. H. Wood & Company of Cradley Heath, Birmingham. A donkey boiler is an auxiliary hot water or steam boiler which is used when the vessel is in port in order to save fuel and allow time for maintenance to be carried out on the main boiler(s). The survey was undertaken by Mr. A. L. Jones at the manufacturers premises.
