She was surveyed both upon the Gridiron and the Patent Slipway of the Penarth Ship Building and Shiprepairing Company Limited by Mr. Henry T. Tyrrell. The reason was due to damage sustained on account of grounding in the River Seine, while proceeding on her recent voyage from Ruen towards Cardiff.

The vessel was an iron hulled steamship, of 1,589 Gross Register Tonnage, and registered to the Port of Whitby. She was built at the Whitehall Shipyard of Messrs. Thomas Turnbull & Son in Whitby having been launched during December 1877. She was completed during January 1878. Her vital statistics were 254.8 ft. in length, 34.1 ft. in breath and she had a depth of 20.5 ft.

In 1896 she was sold to N. Dubuisson of Dunkerque and renamed Marie Dubuisson. She was lost during August 1898 after running aground on Bazonlosquet, SW of the Ile Molene, in foggy conditions, whilst on passage from Oran for Dunkerque loaded with a cargo of barley. [801]

Thomas Turnbull & Son, shipbuilders of Whitby became shipowners in their own right which also spawned other shipowners, for example, Turnbull Brothers of Cardiff (from 1882) formed by Philip and Lewis Turnbull and the better known Turnbull, Scott (from 1869) formed by Reginald March Turnbull and Robert Turnbull Scott.
