'Jordan'
Loss of Steamer from Penarth - 'A Gibraltar telegram states that the British steamer Jordan, from Penarth for Kustendje, on Tuesday, at three p.m., struck on Aceiteras, Trafalgar. She filled with water, and will probably be a total loss. The crew landed at Gibraltar.' - South Wales Daily News [325] [361] 29th December 1898.

 

Arrival of an Overdue Liner - Rescued Penarth Crew Aboard - 'The P. and O. steamer Victoria, which should have arrived at Plymouth on Sunday from Gibraltar, did not reach the Sound until Tuesday morning. She has on board nineteen of the crew of the Bristol steamer Jordan, from Penarth for Kusttendje. The Jordan struck a rock about three and a half miles from the Trafalgar Light on December 28, and began to fill. Signals of distress were shown, and the crew were taken off by the Victoria, which put in at Gibraltar. The Victoria was hove to from Sunday evening until Monday night during a hard north-westerly gale. Tremendous seas were experienced, but the Victoria sustained no injury beyond damage to a few feet of her rail. The following local sailors were taken on board:—

Loss of the s.s. Jordan - 'At the Guildhall, Westminster, yesterday (before Mr Marsham, stipendiary magistrate, assisted by nautical assessors), a Board of Trade inquiry was held into the stranding and total loss of the s.s. Jordan, belonging to the Mercantile Steamship Company, Limited, in December last, off the coast of Spain. The Jordan left Penarth on the 21st December with a crew of 23 hands and a cargo of coal and coke for Kustendje. She went aground near the Trafalgar Lightship, and as the steampipe broke owing to the shifting of the starboard boiler, she was rendered quite helpless, and when the tide was rendered quite helpless, and when the tide rose drifted about till she went ashore again. Nothing could be done to save the vessel The master attributed the casualty to the unusual strength of the current. He admitted I' that the lead was never used before the stranding took place. - Judgment reserved.' - South Wales Daily News [325] [361] 11th February 1899.

 
The s.s. 'Jordan' was built at the North Sands shipyard of J. L. Thompson & Sons Limited at Sunderland as a general cargo, steel hulled, single screw steamer. Launched in January 1889 she was complete in March and handed over to her owners, the Mercantile Steamship Company Limted of London. She was of 2,167 gross and 1,361 net register tons being 275.0 ft. long x 38.2 ft. breath x 20.6 ft. depth. [843]
