'Messina'

The steel hulled, single screw steamer of 1,757 g.r.t. 'Messina' was built in 1884 at Hamburg on the River Elbe by Reiherstieg Schiffswerfte & Maschinenfabrik A.G. as the s.s. 'Kambyses'. She changed name to 'Messina' when sold to Rob M. Sloman & Co. of  Hamburg. She foundered on the 10th October 1909 when in collision with the Austro-Hungarian vessel s.s. 'Dan' off Oporto (Porto in Portuguese).

Cargo of Coal Lost - 'In the Admiralty Court on Tuesday a settlement was arrived at in the action brought by Messrs. Morgan, Wakley, and Co., of Cardiff, owners of a cargo of coal shipped at Penarth on board the German steamship Messina, for carriage to Leghorn, to recover damages for loss of their property, the Messina having been sunk in collision with the Austrian steamer Dan off the Portuguese coast on October 10 last. It, was now stated that the parties had agreed that both vessels were to blame, which means the plaintiffs will recover a moiety of their damages against the defendants. At the time of the collision the Dan was bound from Poti to Rotterdam, laden with an iron ore cargo.' - Evening Express [135] [361] 19th January 1910
