The Board of Trade investigation into the loss of the s.s. 'Allendale' was held at a schoolroom in Sunderland during June 1896 and which held that the 'master alone is in default.'
The " Allendale " left Penarth at about 8 a.m. on the 11th May last (1895) with a crew of fifteen hands all told, and also two stowaways and master's wife as passengers. She had a cargo of about 1,100 tons of coal, including bunker coal, bound for Liverpool, her draught of water at the time of leaving Penarth being 14 feet 4 inches forward and 17 feet 2 inches aft.
